If you’re looking to gain volunteer experience while helping out with fun events like craft sales and charity dinners, Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children (FIMRC) is the right club for you! FIMRC is a non-profit organization that aims to help children in need of medical care in disadvantaged countries.

Members of the University of Waterloo chapter help to fundraise for current FIMRC projects, and get the opportunity to travel abroad to one of the project sites to volunteer at the clinics, help with outreach, and provide health education workshops.

FIMRC was founded in 2018 by Kinesiology students Cindy Wei and Catherine Lee while they were on a study abroad trip in Australia.

“During that time, we developed a passion for global health leadership and wanted to manage a club that focuses on access, education, and community participation,” said Wei, who is now also serving as one of the co-presidents of the club. “We decided to pick up FIMRC because of its emphasis on both local and global volunteerism and advocacy.”

The new club has quickly become involved on campus and in the Waterloo community by hosting fundraising events in collaboration with Crafts 4 Charity, Chef on Call [external link], UW Association for Food Lovers Everywhere [external link] (uWAFFLE), and UW Habitat for Humanity.

“Creating a chapter has changed my global perspective, allowed me to network with helpful individuals in Waterloo, and enhanced my leadership skills,” said Wei.

FIMRC’s next event will be a charity dinner with a trivia night twist at Bhima’s Warung [external link]. Bhima’s is a high-scale restaurant that is well known for serving Indonesian and Thai dishes in the style of French culinary art. For each appetizer, dessert, and special course ordered as part of this event, a portion of the money will go toward FIMRC.

Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a written trivia game at this event, where the highest scoring entries will be given a $5 gift card to Copper Branch Waterloo or Abe Erb. These events will take place next Monday, July 8 and Tuesday, July 9 from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. Additional information, including prices, reservations, and donations, can be found on the Facebook event page [external link].

If you are interested in getting further involved with UWaterloo’s FIMRC chapter, students of all backgrounds and disciplines are encouraged to join the chapter’s Facebook group [external link].
