Meet Austin Sun, a third-year student at the University of Waterloo who, in addition to doing a double major in Mathematical Physics and Pure Math, spends much of his time advocating for sustainability through his work with Sustainable Campus Initiative (SCI).

This term, Sun is the event lead for SCI’s largest annual event known as Ecoloo [external link], happening on November 8 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Student Life Centre (SLC).

Ecoloo 2018 is a sustainability fair where organizations like UW Campus Compost [external link], the Sustainability Office [external link], Engineers without Borders [external link] and the Water Institute [external link] can present their sustainability initiatives. The event will also feature activities, free food, and a draw for prizes.

“I’m really excited about all the activities, because I know there will be a lot,” Sun said, like the sorting challenge that will be held by Campus Compost and the Sustainability Office as well the Ecology Lab’s demonstration on how to make soap from natural ingredients.

Sun joined SCI as an events volunteer at the Earth Hour Festival in winter 2017 and loved his experience. Thus, he decided to continue with SCI as events lead in fall 2017, as a project developer in winter 2018, as a co-ordinator in spring 2018 and now as an events lead.

In addition to spreading the word about sustainability, Sun’s favourite part about being involved with SCI is that he gets to meet new people with similar interests that he wouldn’t have had the chance to meet otherwise.

“I feel like at university, we usually don’t step out of our faculty,” he said. “Just by working at SCI, we meet a lot of people outside of our programs or faculties.”

In his spare time between SCI and school, Sun loves to meet new people, travel, bike, and swim.

Sun recommends the events lead position to someone who is passionate about the environment, is good at working with people, and has good time management skills.

SCI is also hosting Ecoloo 2018 Trivia, a sustainability-themed trivia night at The Bombshelter Pub on November 13 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

“If you want to have some fun after your midterms, be sure to sign up [external link],” said Sun.
