Students expressed their concerns over the disconnected nature of student resources across campus, and the University of Waterloo listened.

On Wednesday, January 30, the official grand opening of the Student Service Centre (SSC) will be celebrated on the first floor of Needles Hall. The new and improved space within Needles Hall will play host to a centralized area in which Waterloo students, both undergrad and postgrad alike, can access almost all campus services related to their education.

“The Student Service Centre is a solution to the issue of isolated services,” says director of the Centre, Nancy Heide. “Many administrative needs are met, which helps to avoid students running around everywhere to different buildings.”

Gone are the days of going on a wild goose chase to pay overdue fines, get parking passes, and settle scheduling conflicts with the Registrar’s Office – the goose chases can now be left to the actual geese (editor's note: don't chase the geese!). Over 40 services for students are now located at the SSC, where students can obtain proof of enrollment letters, alter course schedules, and ask general inquiries about OSAP, tuition fees, and other financial aid topics. Check out the Service map for a full list of services [external link].

Enhanced student convenience doesn’t stop there.

“We’re continuously trying to find ways to make things easier for students,” Heide said. This includes plans in the works to create an online answering system in which students can receive automated answers about general inquiries related to the SSC’s applicable services. This system would negate the long response times that students experience, and allow for individuals to ask questions at any given time during the day. Heide hopes that these plans will be launched in the spring term.

The SSC is a two-year vision finally come to life. After extensive brainstorming to maximize efficiency for students, renovations began in June of 2018. Now, equipped with computerized queueing systems, consultation rooms, and friendly and knowledgeable staff, the SSC is ready to welcome students through its doors.

Needles Hall is just a short walk away, with hours being 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. during weekdays and extended to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays to accommodate students with all-day classes.

Celebrate this new era of convenience by coming out to Needles Hall on January 30 for the grand opening of the Student Service Centre. Free swag and awesome water bottles will be available, and it will be a great way to get all the insight on how the SSC is here to simplify your life as a student.
