The University of Waterloo has drafted a Freedom of Speech Policy and is looking for your feedback on it.

The Provincial government directed universities across the province to develop free speech policies by January 1, 2019. The news release stated that there would be annual monitoring regarding compliance and penalties in the form of grant reduction for non-compliance.

While the University of Waterloo already has policies and agreements regarding the rights of employees and students to academic freedom, and freedom from undue interference, harassment, discrimination and physical harm, it does not currently have a formal freedom of speech policy.

The University has prepared a draft Freedom of Speech Policy [pdf] and is now seeking feedback from students, among other groups on campus before bringing the draft to the University of Waterloo Senate and Board of Governors.

Federation of Students President Richard Wu and Vice President Savannah Richardson will be compiling student feedback and sending it to the University of Waterloo Secretariat. Please send any comments or feedback that you have with respect to the draft policy to by 8 a.m. on Monday, December 3, 2018.
