Gear Up for The Bike Centre Auction
Spring weather has finally arrived in Waterloo! If you’re looking for a way to take advantage of the sunshine and clear skies this summer, stop by The Bike Centre’s upcoming Bike Auction and get yourself a cool new ride.
The auction is taking place in the Student Life Centre Great Hall on Wednesday, May 16 with bidding beginning promptly at noon.
“We find bikes that have been abandoned around campus,” explained Bike Centre coordinator Peter Vuong. “We bring them in and get them cleared by campus police to make sure that they were not reported as lost or stolen. Our volunteers work on them over the term doing all the necessary maintenance and repairs to put the bikes back into a functional state, and then we put them up for auction.”
“This term we have a record high of roughly 30 to 35 bikes,” said Bike Centre coordinator Kiwi Cheng. “We will also leave approximately five to seven bikes for sale in The Bike Centre for those that can’t make the auction.”
Bikes will be rolled out onto stage one by one as an auctioneer takes bids from students in the crowd. Once a bike has no counter bids, it will go home with its new owner. All proceeds from the bike auction will help purchase new tools and pieces of equipment to further enhance The Bike Centre’s services.
A piece of advice from The Bike Centre coordinators is to arrive early if you wish to check out all the amazing bikes up for auction and ensure you don’t miss out on the chance to bid for your favorites.
“Just in case, it’s always good to have two bikes that you’re looking at so if one doesn’t go through, you have a backup option,” said Cheng.
In addition to their bi-annual bike auction, The Bike Centre also offers a number of other services. If you’re not looking to buy your own bike, The Bike Centre runs a bike rental program where you can rent a bike just for the term. If your bike is ever in need of a little sprucing up, The Bike Centre also has a do-it-yourself shop where students have access to tools and new parts at student-friendly prices.
