Fashionable, Affordable and … Environmental?
Did you know that buying second-hand clothes is actually good for the environment? Sustainable Campus Initiative (SCI) holds termly second-hand clothing sales to reduce the amount of waste and promote the purchasing of second-hand fashion.
“Second-hand clothing has a much smaller footprint because it's not made out of new, raw materials, and brings quality, affordable clothing to campus for the convenience of students,” said SCI Coordinator Maggie Chang.
SCI sets up clothing donation boxes in all of the residences across campus for students to donate clothing that they do not want anymore. Since everything comes from students, a lot of the clothes found at the sale feature clothes from popular stores like Adidas, Aritzia, Urban Outfitters, H&M, Levi’s, and even school merchandise. For pieces that don’t sell, SCI donates them to the Ontario Federation for Cerebral Palsy.
In addition to helping the environment by buying and donating second-hand clothing, you can volunteer your time to become involved with future second-hand clothing sales and other SCI projects.
“There is a lot of physical work involved in setting up this event – all of the clothes need to be organized and sorted into categories, and then folded and prepared for display for the sale day,” said SCI Fashion Lead Michelle Tomczewska. “During the actual sale day, volunteers help make sure that displays are neat. Our volunteers were imperative in making this sale possible, and we would gladly welcome even additional help for future terms.”
While the second-hand clothing sale is over for the term, you can contribute to sustainable fashion by donating your old, unwanted clothes and keeping an eye out for future clothing sales to stock up your wardrobe!
