Incidental Fees are charged to your student account in each term that you are enrolled in at least one on-campus course. You need to pay all the fees posted to your student account in full each term in order to be registered for that term. Refunds are available for some of these fees. For an explanation of incidental fees not administered through the Federation of Students, please see the uWaterloo undergraduate incidental fees page to learn more about them and how to opt out.
The Federation of Students Fee is a non-refundable amount that is paid by every undergraduate student. Part-time students pay 30% of the fee. Prior to the 2018 March General Meeting, a portion of the first-year Orientation budget was subsidized by funds from the Feds fee paid by all undergraduates. At the 2018 March General Meeting, students voted to transfer Orientation expenses solely to the first-year students participating in Orientation, and to decrease the Feds fee for all undergrads to reflect an amount equivalent to the funds previously needed to subsidize Orientation.
The Orientation line from the Feds budget amounted to $12,000. With approximately 60,000 paying members, it was calculated to decrease the Feds fee by $0.20.
Additionally, students voted to increase the Feds fee by $0.20 to subsidize a new, student-run diversity and equity service.
Increases of $0.98 and $1.81 to the Feds fee and first-year Orientation fee respectively were also passed at the 2018 March General Meeting to account for inflation as calculated by the annual Consumer Price Index (CPI) of Canada.
Overall, the Feds fee increased due to minimum wage, CPI, and the new service’s staff.
