One-to-One Peer Support

MATES provides services to students who are experiencing stress and anxiety, academic issues, social and relationship difficulties, mental health challenges, and transitional challenges into University life and challenges in adapting to culture.

Mission Statement

MATES (Mentor Assistance Through Education and Support) is a one-to-one student peer support program offered by the Federation of Students in consultation with Campus Wellness. MATES provides support to students who are hoping to build social skills, or are experiencing personal or academic concerns or low-level mental health and wellness difficulties. MATES volunteers are also well-trained and knowledgeable about various resources on and off campus and can assist students through the navigation of those resources.

Our Services

MATES volunteers go through an intensive selection process and receive extensive training in mentorship by Clinical Psychologists from UW Counselling Services. MATES volunteers are trained in the following areas:

  • academic issues
  • social and relationship difficulties
  • coping skill development
  • transitional challenges to university life
  • challenges in adapting to culture

We offer both appointment and drop-in sessions. Students can set up an appointment with a MATES Peer Supporter by filling out our appointment form below. Alternatively, students may utilize our drop-in hours and be seen at the next available appointment time, however we recommend booking an appointment to ensure that you have a full hour reserved at your preferred time.

Request an Appointment

Please use the MATES Request Appointment Form if you wish to make an appointment with a MATES volunteer for one-to-one peer support.
