The Intersectionality of Violence
As part of UWaterloo’s 16 Days to End Gender-Based Violence campaign, Feds student-run services RAISE, Women's Centre and Glow will be co-facilitating The Intersectionality of Violence: In Conversation with Leon Tsai and Student Activists in the second floor event space in E7, an event to remember and bring to light the violence trans people of colour experience in Canada.
We will start with a moment of silence, while a digital art instillation/slide show plays in the background, remembering trans people of colour who have fallen victim to gender-based violence. We will then welcome Leon Tsai, a local youth activist the External Coordinator of the UTSC’s Women’s and Trans Centre, who will speak about how gender-based violence affects trans people and how it intersects with racial identity.
We will end with a panel discussion featuring our guest speaker and a number of other equity student leaders on campus who are in positions to support and advocate for trans people of colour. Our discussion will focus on how rhetoric that aims to erase or demonize trans folks on campus, in our local community, provincially, nationally, and from a North American context, create an environment where gender-based violence against trans people becomes likelier. Our goal is to shine a light on what genuine and empathetic trans allyship looks like when supporting trans folks, particularly trans folks of colour.
We look forward to seeing you there!
